New Status of women in Hinduism

Here is a list of the myths propagated by anti-Hindus to malign Hinduism on women's issues..
1. The Hindu Woman has no right to divorce her husband.
Absoulte crap ! Divorce in Hindus is governed by a modern laws under the ‘Hindu Marriage act 1955. Please see this link and I challenge you that Hindu women have a modern democratic law protecting them and they enjoy facilities that no muslim woman can even dream of ! See divorce section no.13 – there are over 50 options for the woman ! I challenge you to show me any islamic law giving so many priviledges to women !http://www.sudhirlaw.com/HMA55.htm
2. She has no property or inheritance rights.
Nonsense ! THE HINDU SUCCESSION ACT OF 1956:This Act recognized an equal right for women in the matter of inheritance of property. She can inherit the property of father along with her brothers. She can also sell or mortgage the inherited property or use it for herself. For the first time absolute ownership was conferred to a woman by this Act.In muslims the sisters get half of the brothers !
3. Choice of partner is limited because she can only marry within her own caste; moreover her horoscope must match that of the intending bridegroom/family.
Sorry, wrong again ! Castes are not seen during marriage. Horoscopes are only matched if it is an arranged marriage.
4. The family of the girl has to offer an enormous dowry to the bridegroom/family.
Nonsense again !Dowry is given as a gift, and not demanded !It is illegal to demand dowry ! The girl can report to the police if her husband or inlaws demand dowry !See the law:THE DOWRY PROHIBITION ACT OF 1961(there are new latest ammendments to the act- I will post them at your request)
5. If her husband dies she should commit Sati (being cremated with her dead husband). Since today's law forbids Sati, society mainly punishes her in other "holy"
Please provide statistics of Sati for the past 50 years ! Are you living in a dream world ? Read the sati prevention act 1829 and 19875. She cannot remarry.Crap again:In the case of widows.See this :THE HINDU WIDOW RE-MARRIAGE ACT OF 1856:This Act allowed widows to remarry and section 5 of this Act ensured her to enjoy all the rights which a married woman did.In the case of divorced women :http://www.sudhirlaw.com/HMA55.htmDivorced persons. When may marry again.- When a marriage has been dissolved by a decree of divorce and either there is no right of appeal against the decree or, if there is such a right of appeal, the time for appealing has expired without an appeal having been presented, or an appeal has been presented but has been dismissed, it shall be lawful for either party to the marriage to marry again.
6. The widow is considered to be a curse and must not be seen in public. She cannot wear jewelry or colourful clothes. (She should not even take part in her children's marriage!)
Please wake up and come to reality !THE HINDU WIDOW RE-MARRIAGE ACT OF 1856:This Act allowed widows to remarry and section 5 of this Act ensured her to enjoy all the rights which a married woman did.
7. Child and infant marriage is encouraged.
See this:Conditions of a Hindu marriage :(iii) the bridegroom has completed the age of twenty one years and the bride the age of eighteen years at the time of the marriage;http://www.sudhirlaw.com/HMA55.htm
8. Bride burning for dowry:
There are stringent laws against this. Besides mainstream Hindus shun and boycott such shameful incidents which are grossly exaggerated by the post-modern media.

"All wife of the host reciting three mantras go round the horse. While praying, they say: 'O horse, you are, protecter of the community on the basis of good qualities, you are, protecter or treasure of happiness. O horse, you become my husband.'" - Yajur Veda 23/19.

"After the animal is purified by the priest, the principal wife sleeps near the horse and says: 'O Horse, i extract the semen worth conception and you release the semen worth conception'" - Yajur Veda 23/20.

The horse and principal wife spread two legs each. Then the Ardhvaryu(priest) orders to cover the oblation place, raise canopy etc. After this, the principal wife of the host pulls penis of the horse and puts it in her vagina and says: "This horse may release semen in me." -Yajur Veda 23/20.

Then the host, while praying to the horse says:

"O horse, please throw semen on the upper part of the anus of my wife. Expand your penis and insert it in the vagina because after insertion, this penis makes women happy and lively" - 23/21.

In the vedic age, the customs of polygamy was prevalent. Each wife spent most of the time devising ways and means to become favourite to her husband. Clear references are available in 'Rig Veda', (14/45),' and Atharva Veda (3/81)'

Hindu women do have the right to divorce a man. And their reasons can be absolutely justified. However, the society is often not so open-minded and often people turn their backs on women who are divorced. I have met Brahmin women who felt they had no support from society because they had divorced. They felt totally alone and stigmatized by their own community. People were not so interested in the reasons why they divorced, but that they divorced. The government can make rules and laws but that does not mean that people also evolve accordingly. In the cases I knew the women finally decided to join the Christian Church or some other religion so that they had a community who would accept them as they were. I am a Brahmin myself and I feel it such a shame how some Hindus treat women who have divorced. Some of the women I came to know developed serious mental problems due to the way society treated them. It is a shame. I feel very very bad about this. The problem for this lies perhaps in the fact that Hindu culture is often not really understood. People follow rituals and don't know why etc. Then the value of a culture is not practiced. Especially when a woman is not treated well in a house then the Gods are not happy. That is written in the scriptures. I also feel the a person does not have to stay with a person who treats them badly. We are all responsible for ourselves and our own salvation. If we waste our lives with people who degrade us then we have to pay the price of lost time and energy. Some think that it is their karma to be ill-treated. But that is wrong. If we know it better and can free ourselves from violence then we should do that and move on with our lives. Unfortunately many Hindus don't know their own religion well enough to act in a better way towards divorced women. Hinduism is a very tolerant religion and has great ethics but if we have half knowledge and lack understanding then it can be fatal. Life is meant for growth of our personality, understanding etc in a positive way. If a relationship really does not allow such growth, and we should move on. That is not judgment, but understanding.

this concept of implementation of non-compulsion of dowry system is a real joke on this society-whichever religion it be,,,, total hypocratical society we are in talking of the bride complaining about dowry,, the days are of dowry harassment and the poor girl who has come in as bride either suffers humiliation or ends up ending her life, this is dowry law implementation in our Society,, it is better not to make a mockery of discussing that this provision is available .. in this money-minded mercenary society of ours ... it is a tragic situation bringing tears from the depths of heart come to think of the suffering brides in silence .. due to social compulsions

I'm seeing these comments late, but if anyone still reads this, I would like you to note that the argument has a severe flaw. Hinduism is being defended by the law. The Hindu Marriage Act, laws against Sati, etc. do not govern Hinduism as a religion. That's like saying that Catholics have the right to divorce because the government can override the Pope. Hinduism per se is an amalgamation of many texts; therefore, the religion itself is practiced differently depending on family. Many families do look at caste when arranging marriages, (mine for example). Many women are still forced into sati. Many still demand dowry. But there are also many families that don't. It's interesting that in the zeal to defend Hinduism, nobody seems to know what it really is and few seem to have read any of the original texts. And worse, everyone wants to cover the sun with a single thumb! We need to work to resolve the problems associated with sati and dowry, not pretend they don't exist because the law says so.

By the way, also remember that Hinduism is a term that was placed on Indians by the Muslims. There was never a true Hindu identity in ancient India and the faith now incorporates elements of Jainism, Buddhism, Bhagavatam, Vedic Brahmanism, and yes, as much as most people hate to admit, even ancient Christianity. But hey, I'm not saying there's anything wrong with the mixture. God bless.
